CCOBH-New Castle County Services Seminar for Civic Association Leaders

There will be a CCOBH-New Castle County Services Seminar for Civic Association Leaders, on Monday, November 14, 2016 from 6-8 PM at the Claymont Public Library.

County personnel will discuss services including sewer line repair, police special services, permit requirements, issues involving parks and streams.

Attendees are invited to bring their own questions and George Casson from New Castle County Constituent Services will provide an answer. Mr. Casson will also indicate where on the County website Civic Association leaders can find useful information such as the Civic Association Manual and the Maintenance Corporation Manual.

Bring your questions.

If you would like to participate in actual searches for information, please bring a laptop.

New Castle County Executive Debate-Wed. Oct. 26th-7:30pm

ncc_county-exec_debateWe invite you to attend a debate between the two candidates for New Castle County Executive, Mark Blake and Matt Meyer. It is jointly sponsored by CCOBH and EB100 (Eastern Brandywine Hundred Coordinating Council).

The debate will be held on Wednesday, October 26th at 7:30PM at the Talleyville Fire Hall. Panelists from CCOBH and EB100 will question the candidates, and questions may also be submitted by the audience.

County government is the government which most affects our daily lives, and both Mark Blake and Matt Meyer have some good ideas. We encourage residents to come out and hear those ideas, as well as to bring questions of their own.

NCC Dept. of Special Services-Sewer Preventative Maintenance

Here in PDF format is the Powerpoint presentation given by representatives of the Department of Special Services this past Tuesday September 6, 2016 on the NCC Sewer Maintenance:Preventative Maintenance Program. This was recently shared by NCC Councilman Bob Weiner.

It includes the projected start dates in FY 2017 for Communities throughout the county to receive Preventative Sewer Maintenance (by Council District) and pipeline evaluation.

Community Notice to Discuss Partial Redevelopment of Concord Plaza

Below is some information from Councilman Bob Weiner on an upcoming community meeting.

Dear community leaders and friends,

Please share this important information with your neighbors and friends. 

 I am pleased to facilitate a community meeting on September 15, 2016 in the Brandywine Hundred Library, 1300 Foulk Road, so that we as a community can learn about the redevelopment of Concord Plaza.  As you may know, the Buccini-Pollin Group, which owns the Concord Plaza office park on Silverside Road, near Concord Pike, intends to redevelop a portion of Concord Plaza in order to convert a portion of the office park nearest to Concord Pike into a more pedestrian-friendly and contemporary mixed-use village. (Artistic rendering embedded below)

 The applicant’s attorney, Larry Tarabicos, described the plan to us at our last community meeting as follows: The Buccini-Pollin Group intends to convert approximately 185,000 square feet of existing decades old office space into 312 apartments; 26,500 square feet of retail space; and a new state-of-the-art 54,000 square foot signature office building. The overall project involves demolishing approximately 8 of the existing buildings and replacing them with luxury apartments (including numerous amenities for the residents), atop specialty retail, restaurants, cafes; as well as the signature office building. Approximately 370,000 square feet of existing office buildings will remain; making this community a fully integrated and diverse mixed-use village, with many amenities, services, and pedestrian enhancements for the residents and employees of this community. The project continues to weave its way through the land development approval process.

 Concord Plaza is zoned “Office Regional” aka “OR”. The proposed partial redevelopment plan is consistent with the current zoning category; and no County Council rezoning vote is required. As such, New Castle County Council’s authority is limited to reviewing the Redevelopment Plan, to assure that the plan is consistent with all applicable state and county requirements, including adequacy of infrastructure and traffic capacity.

Traffic improvements must be required when there are substantially increased burdens on existing roads and intersections. If the State does not plan to invest in those improvements in the near term, the developer must.  Redevelopment policy cannot ignore this core principle.

County Council relies upon the professional guidance of the New Castle County Land Use Department. The State Department of Transportation Traffic Study is also scrutinized. If the plan conforms with the legal requirements, County Council must approve the re-subdivision plan.

 The applicant anticipates bringing the project before New Castle County Council within the next couple of months for a public hearing.

 The entire review process…undertaken by New Castle County Land Use Department professional land use and transportation planners…as well as the subsequent County Council hearing…engages the public. As such, public input is welcome and encouraged.

Reminder-Christina River Watershed Cleanup-Saturday, April 9th

Here is your opportunity to join the Christina River Watershed Cleanup! Make a difference by spending a little time along the Naamas Creek!

This year’s Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, April 9. The Naamans Watershed group will meet at 8 AM behind Sweeney’s in the F&N Shopping Center.  Hope you will be able to participate.

Below is a summary of our cleanup last year.

In 2015 the Naamans Creek contingent pulled out over 2 tons of trash from the stream and surroundings. This trash included car tires, shopping carts, and wire and wooden fencing.  Most of the material was plastic bags and bottles, soda and beer cans and newspaper circulars.

Eighty (80) volunteers cleaned 16 different sites in our watershed. County Councilman John Cartier participated in the cleanup. We had groups of volunteers from the Boy Scouts, First Unitarian Church, the DuPont Company, Ursuline Academy, and the Claymont Falcons.  Local Councilman Cartier and businesses including Harry’s, Sweeneys, Nino’s, Rite Aid, F&N Liquors, Acme, Safeway and GotJunk participated in funding the Cleanup expenses and the lunch at the end of the Cleanup.

Besides the cleanup we are trying to improve the flow of water through the watershed and health of surrounding areas by targeting areas of invasive plants for elimination and planting attractive species in floodplain areas.

Household Hazardous Waste / Electronic Goods / Paper Shredding Events

Here is a Collection Event Flyer of upcoming recycling events throughout the State held by the DSWA (Delaware Solid Waste Authority).

Household Hazardous Waste - Household Hazardous Waste- Product containers marked with words, “Warning: Hazardous,” “Flammable,” “Poisonous,” “Corrosive” or “Explosive.” For example; household cleaners, garden pesticides, oil-based paints only (no latex paint will be accepted), nail polish, fluorescent bulbs, or antifreeze.

Electronic Goods Recycling - Electronic equipment such as, old computers, printers, CD players, microwaves, telephones, televisions, game boys, fax machines, answering machines, and VCRs.

Paper Shredding  Residents can bring up to 2 file boxes of personal confidential papers for shredding (financial and legal documents, receipts, and tax and medical records). Papers with staples or paper clips are accepted.

All events are restricted to Delaware residents and are held rain or shine.

2016 Governor’s Outstanding Youth Volunteer Service Awards Nomination

NOMINATE AN OUTSTANDING YOUTH VOLUNTEER TODAY!

Volunteer DelawareNominations for the Governor’s Outstanding Youth Volunteer Service Awards are now being accepted by the State Office of Volunteerism. This is a wonderful way to recognize the impact Delaware’s youth volunteers, 18 and younger, have on their communities through volunteerism. Award recipients will be honored at a special ceremony on May 19, 2016 at Polytech Adult Education Conference Center.

Individuals and groups volunteering in the following service categories will be chosen; Arts/Culture, Community Service, Education, Environment, Health and Special Needs, Human Needs, Public Safety, Social Justice/Advocacy.  Nominees must have volunteered the hours during the 2015-2015 school calendar year.  Nomination packets must be delivered to the State Office of Volunteerism by Friday, April 8, 2016.
