Residential Waste Disposal & Recycle Collection Guide

Below is the latest document for residents to use to ease their selection of a waste hauler. We have provided this  RESIDENTIAL-WASTE-DISPOSAL Guide for our members use on their websites.

This guide can assist the residential customer in evaluating various companies that collect waste for disposal and recycling. While the basic services of these companies are similar, each has unique operation and options that may appeal to the customer. By seeking answers to the questions below the customer can identify the company that will best suit requirements of a particular household and determine the relative costs of the service. It is recommended that several waste collection companies be interviewed and the overall costs for services meeting the customer’s expectation be tabulated for comparison. A list of Delaware residential haulers offering universal curbside recycling is available at: DSWA (http://www.dswa.com/universalRecyclingServices.asp)

Each company provides basic service consisting of: weekly collection of household waste and periodic collection of material for recycling. When interviewing potential waste collectors determine the following:

Regular Trash

What is the cost of once per week collection of regular trash?
Is twice per week collection an option? Cost?
Are waste containers provided for regular trash or does the customer provide?
What is the standard container size?
Can smaller containers be provided if size is a problem?

Recycle Services

Is recycle waste collected at a different time? How often?
What is the standard container size?
Can smaller containers be provided if size is a problem?
Can waste be collected at the house or must cans be placed at the curb? Cost?

Yard Waste

Is there a separate charge for yard waste collection? Cost?
How often is yard waste collected?
Is there a limit on size or quantity hauled away?
If yard waste is included as a surcharge, does the surcharge continue during periods when there is no yard waste?

Miscellaneous

Is there a senior discounted rate?
Are there any other costs or surcharges.

The Council of Civic Organizations of Brandywine Hundred, Inc. and The Eastern Brandywine Hundred Coordinating Council, Inc. are pleased to announce that they will be sponsoring a Candidates Forum for the candidates seeking election to the Brandywine School District Board. This event, open to all who are interested in the future of our schools and community, will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium of Springer Middle School located at 2220 Shipley Road.

This School Board election, which will take place on Tuesday May 14th, pits three incumbent members of the Brandywine District School Board against three challengers.

Thus, knowing the views of the candidates and where they stand on the issues facing our District and its students is imperative for you to make an informed choice on May 14th.

CCOBH and the Eastern Brandywine Hundred Coordinating Council invite everyone to join us in meeting the candidates and learning more about what they propose for education choices and finances in Brandywine Hundred and that portion of the City of Wilmington included in the School District.

22nd Annual Christina River Cleanup a Success

The results of the April 6, 2013 cleanup of Naamans Creek held in connection with the 22nd Annual Christina River Cleanup are as follows.

In the entire Christina River Cleanup, approximately 18 tons of trash was collected.

The Naamans Creek contingent numbered 60 volunteers and picked up about 1.75 ton including 14 tires, 14 shopping carts, two bicycles, a windshield, boards, clothing, liquor bottles and real estate signs. In addition, six (6) shopping carts were cleaned and returned to the ACME.

Most of the trash was plastic bags, food containers, plastic bottles and cans… so there was a lot of lightweight material in that 1.75 tons.

Councilman John Cartier and State Representative Dennis Williams participated in the Cleanup on Naamans Creek.

1-800-Got-Junk took two truck loads of “junk” to the landfill.

Lunch was supplied by Harry’s, ACME, Safeway, F&N Liquors, Sweeney’s and Rite Aid. Thanks to these wonderful supporters!

If you attended the Christina River Cleanup and you have pictures you would like to share, send them to us and we will post them on the website.

Thanks to everyone for your efforts in making this another successful Christina River Cleanup day!

Christina-River-Cleanup_NaamansCCOBH is once again proud to help support the cleanup of the Naamans Creek portion of the Christina River Watershed on Saturday April 6th from 8am to Noon. We will meet behind Sweeney’s Bakery in the F&N Shopping Center.

It is recommended that volunteers wear brightly-colored clothing, long sleeves and pants, boots or water resistant shoes, hats, and bring heavy duty gloves, insect repellent, and sunscreen.

So gather your civic association members and all your friends to help participate in this worthwhile endeavor. For directions and more information go to Christina River Cleanup.org. For more info about your local site click on the Sites tab at the top of the page.

Benefits for online registering of your group allows the leader to register for T-shirts (very nice) and a lunch to be provided at Harry’s Savoy at Noon (picnic lunches for adults and Papa John’s pizza for kids).
