Naamans Creek Watershed Cleanup Report

Many thanks to the approximately 80 neighborhood volunteers who helped clean up about 2800 lbs. of trash from the Namaans Creek Watershed on Saturday April 21st. Councilman John Cartier and State Representative Bryon Short participated along Naamans Creek.

The Tri-state Mall area was the overall winner, as usual, with an ample supply of shopping carts, lots of trash in plastic bags, and a few tires.

We completely filled the truck at Tri-state, had to run to the landfill to unload and then head back to Tri-state to finish up, filling the truck up another ¼ full. (See photo below).

We were very fortunate to have the assistance of the great guys from 1800GotJunk.

Once again, a very successful cleanup event for the Naamans Creek Watershed and all the other watersheds in the Christina River Watershed. The Christina River Watershed provides 75% of the public water supply for residents and businesses in New Castle County. Your annual efforts help to improve wildlife habitat and keep each of these waterways as free from debris as possible. Thanks again to all the volunteers! You’re the best!

Below are a few pictures from the event.

Volunteers Sought for 21st Annual Christina River Cleanup on April 21

NEW CASTLE COUNTY (March 28, 2012) – DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara encourages volunteers to join the Christina River Watershed Cleanup along the river and several of its tributaries on Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 12 sites throughout northern New Castle County. Due to other activities that day, two sites will begin the cleanup early – the City of Newark at 7:30 a.m. and the Naamans Creek site at 8 a.m. The Naamans Creek meeting location site is located at the east end of the F&N Shopping Center behind Sweeney’s Bakery. The Cleanup will also be included with Volunteer Delaware’s National Volunteer Week promotion.

“Helping to beautify our waterways is the perfect way to spend a few hours on a Saturday morning,” said Secretary O’Mara. “Clearing debris from the Christina watershed not only improves the landscape for residents and visitors to enjoy, it improves the health and water quality of the river and its tributaries, the primary sources of public water supply for New Castle County.”

The annual cleanup, now in its 21st year, will be held rain or shine. Since the cleanup began in 1992, more than 350 tons of tires, appliances, household items, and plastic and styrofoam have been cleared from the Christina River, White Clay Creek and other tributaries.

DNREC has been a sponsor and an integral part of the Christina River Watershed Cleanup since its inception, providing funding and other support. Specifically, DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife provides staff, boats, and specialized equipment to move volunteers and remove trash from remote locations. The cleanup of the river within the city of Wilmington benefits DNREC’s ongoing marsh restoration work at the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge.

For a list of cleanup sites with directions and to register, visit www.ChristinaRiverCleanup.org or call 302-838-1897. Volunteers are encouraged to register for one of the 12 sites before Monday, April 16, so adequate supplies can be provided to each site captain. Due to insurance requirements, volunteers under the age of 16 must have adult supervision.

Participants are encouraged to wear brightly-colored clothing, long sleeves and pants, boots or water-resistant shoes, hats and heavy-duty gloves and to use insect repellent and sunscreen. Waders or hip boots are also helpful for the City of Wilmington and Churchman’s Marsh – Christiana and Newport sites. Additional jon-boat-type work boats are still needed for Wilmington’s Riverfront and the Churchman’s Marsh – Newport area. All participants must wear a life jacket while on board any boat.

All volunteers will receive a 2012 Christina River Watershed Cleanup t-shirt designed by Michael Cronin, a high school senior who attends Caravel Academy in Bear.

More than 50 organizations and businesses sponsor the cleanup each year. Primary sponsors besides DNREC include: Christina Conservancy, Inc.; Partnership for the Delaware Estuary; Artesian Water Company; United Water Delaware; Noramco, Inc.; GE Ceramic Composite Products and Dow Chemical.

CCOBH Supports Brandywine School District Operating Referendum

During more than fifty years of service to the Brandywine Hundred area, the Council of Civic Organizations of Brandywine Hundred (CCOBH) has rarely endorsed either a candidate for election or a position “for” or “against” a school district referendum. However, the Brandywine School District Operating Referendum scheduled for this Wednesday, March 28th is a rare exception.

The Board has had the opportunity to examine the entire process closely. The Executive Board of CCOBH is particularly impressed that Brandywine School District reached out to the community and engaged them in an open and transparent effort to create this budget request. The Board has concluded that the referendum request is both prudent and targeted at those key elements of our children’s education needed to ensure that the District will have at its disposal the curriculum, programs, and educational tools needed to provide the best education possible, and that all this can take place in a school environment that is safe and well maintained. The Brandywine School District has earned a respected reputation for setting and achieving high educational and operational goals, and has therefore earned the support of the community for this reasonable and responsible request to maintain the momentum that it has achieved.

Therefore, CCOBH strongly endorses the Brandywine School District Operating Referendum, and urges all voters in the District to vote “For” the referendum. Where to vote.

If your association is not scheduled to meet before the referendum, please give some thought to sending out a notice informing your community about an upcoming referendum meeting scheduled for a school near you. Information regarding those meetings can be obtained by contacting the individuals below.

CCOBH urges you and your neighbors to become informed concerning this referendum and about how it impacts you and our children.

Bob Valihura

———————————————————————————————-

Hello Civic Leaders:

As you know by now, the Brandywine School District has scheduled an Operating Referendum on March 28, 2012. Over the last decade, Brandywine School District has made steady progress toward making our schools the best in the Delaware region. We have achieved this success over the years by working closely with civic and business leaders throughout the district.

A community based Referendum Planning Committee was organized last year that spent several months studying the district’s operating needs and determining how much funding will be required over the next few years to maintain our facilities, and to continue improving our children’s education. The request we have put before the community is the product of their work.

Who were the members of the Referendum Planning Committee?

The committee included teachers, administrators, parents, business leaders, and civic leaders like you. All of them volunteered their time to prepare a responsible and frugal funding.

The economy has been very tough on everyone.

This is why we believe it is particularly important to reach out to the community to explain why this referendum is essential now, and how we arrived at the funding we are requesting.

Why this referendum Presentation is important to you!

The Referendum Steering Committee composed of community members, school district staff members and teachers, just like the Planning Committee, has begun making presentations to various community groups to help them understand the need for this referendum and the impact it will have on our children’s education. This will be your best opportunity to listen to and question the people who planned and proposed this referendum.

Invite us to discuss the 2012 Referendum in your community! Please call or e-mail a response today with a suggested date, time and location for your next community meeting. Thank you for your interest.
